Our seven year old twins have been attending AK Martial Arts since 2016. I was looking for a solution that would help our children learn to focus, pay attention and develop self confidence. Before choosing AK, we went to several different studios in our area, and it wasn’t long before I realized that they were more interested in our money than anything else. Two-year/three-year commitments, horrible reviews from parents unable to break out of their contracts, etc. Add to that, I witnessed instructors that were acting like drill-sergeants at boot camp towards my five-year olds! I was brought up in a competitive sports environment as a child. I was under a strict regimen and coaching starting at eight and by the time I entered my teens, I was fed up and no longer wanted any part in it. The passion was driven out of me. It’s a lesson that I’ve carried with me all my life, and a mistake I’d never make with my own kids.
Well, AK Martial arts isn’t like that. They are month to month. That was a big plus for us since we weren’t sure at the time if we are going to need to relocate the following year. What I didn’t realize at the time was what a fantastic philosophy AK uses towards its students. The first thing that we noticed with our kids was a literal transformation of behavior- suddenly, our unruly, screaming kids were much more well behaved at home. My kids actually respond to me with a “Yes Sir!” now more often then not- can you believe that?
I really feel the staff at AK Martial arts are terrific people that truly care about their students. Plus they offer more than just teaching your kids “karate”. There’s all sorts of different “camps” offered, parent nights out, safety training, seasonal events, an agility class and more. And probably the most important statement I can make in favor of AK Martial arts and why you would want to enroll your children: my kids never want to miss a single day. They are basically there six days a week, usually two classes per day. Not because they are forced to go, because they absolutely love being there.
Update July 13, 2019: We are spending the morning here at Alga Norte Park with all the AK families having a terrific time. The instructors create such a great environment for the kids and they love coming to class day after day. No burnout! Great experience for entire family!
